Nicole Blackman (2005)

Nicole M.K. Blackman graduated from Howard University in May, 2005, and is currently a graduate student in the Department of Chemical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University.

As a member of the Darrell Velegol lab group, which studies colloidal assembly and interactions, Nicole’s research is focused on measuring charge nonuniformity of colloidal particles. Traditionally, colloidal particles have been thought to be uniformly charged.

However, in the past 15 years, researchers have determined that particles are often non-uniformly charged and in a random manner. The ability to accurately measure charge nonuniformity allows for increased stability of colloidal suspensions and accurate colloidal assembly.

While at Howard, Nicole was involved in a number of campus organizations including Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key International Honour Society and the Howard Gospel Choir. She served on the executive board of the National Society of Black Engineers, and was also a College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Sciences Student Ambassador.

Her excellence and involvement continued and was formally recognized when she was awarded the Harvey and Geraldine Brush Engineering Fellowship in her first year at Penn State.
